Steps For Getting Private Tutoring Services

By Tameka Ware

Because life is getting more hectic and schools are getting more demanding, students often find they need help that the parent either can't provide, or doesn't have time to provide. This may mean depending on tutoring services for help. Not all of them are equal, however. There are keys that it is advisable to note before contracting with someone to ensure you get the best possible.

It is a good idea to get ideas from students and their parents about tutors they have used and been happy with. This will help to find one that is doing a good job. Ask for referrals, considering the differences in how the students compare in their learning needs.

Understand the importance of obtaining special help for a child that is struggling. Any time more individualized help can be given, the student benefits the most. One-on-one is preferred, but if cost is a big factor, it is possible to get the services of one tutor for a group of 3-4 students.

Having well-defined goals is important for both the student and the tutor. The goal might be to improve test-taking skills so as to do better on state tests, or to make higher scores on the SAT and ACT test so as to stand a better chance of getting accepted into the chosen college. The goal might just be to improve in a particular subject, or even to improve the overall reading level in an attempt of getting on grade level. Specific goals will help both the tutor and the student know what is expected.

The location and set up of the tutoring is a major factor. Though some do okay in a center, others are too uncomfortable, and would do better in their home. Online sessions are also available, which can be accessed from a home or school computer. Costs vary with the set up, so that has to be taken into consideration also. In-home and individual online help may be the most expensive.

Check about assessments and evaluations. There should be an initial placement assessment should be free for those signing up for services. Frequent periodic assessments are also important in evaluating student progress. They should also have regular reports, whether formal or informal, about the student's progress. This also helps direct instruction as well.

Check about individualization as well. Even if the tutor is working with multiple students, there should be individualization according to ability level, learning style, and ongoing progress. Keeping the numbers in each group small will help in being able to give this individual attention.

Possibly the most important thing to consider is the cost. It would be nice to not have to be concerned with that, but the expense can be a major factor. The more individual the attention received, the higher the cost, with one-on-one being the most expensive tutoring services. It might not be affordable, however. It may be necessary to go for a cheaper option. The lower number of students in a group the more it will cost, but also, the greater will be the help.
